Note: Justify WHY you are playing a game. Students think games are meaningless if you don't! Tell them why it is an important game, or else we hear from the students, "Can I leave? Because we are JUST playing games." Errrr

Manage your time wisely! If you are in the blackbox and need to share, make sure you get out in a timely manner. Sharing IS caring.

  1. What Mr. Moore said is true. Tell them why you are doing games...there are lots of reasons why, so share that information with them.
Also, I noticed today that rehearsal started today with some unfocused actors (not surprising when break is on its way), and therefore, seniors using loud voices (not authoratative - know the difference between raising your voice and commanding respect -- we can address this in class). It seemed disheveled to me. How can you make it less so as the days go by?
I also wouldn't give out important information like off-book dates or stage directions until you have the group focused and quiet.
You also have some great resources in some of your senior and junior actors. Why not ask them to warm people up? They seem to have a good sense of how to feel the vibe of the crowd and have been doing it all year for me...so give that a try sometimes.

  2. This is good. Games are good. I agree with Houston saying that there are a lot of talented junior and senior actors in all of the plays who know warm ups. If they were to lead some warm-ups the directors could spend some time contemplating how they are going to make the practice happen goodly.

  3. Yes, I have to agree with everything Houston has said, it is something that I myself need to do. However, at the beginning I felt like there was a hard time focusing them and quieting them, so that is something that I think we could possibly maybe go over?!? eh?! Anywho, besides that I was really impressed with rehearsal, I think it went very smoothly! Testa and Nate were awesome for taking care of the actors while blocking was happening! I was quite happy with the outcome of today.

  4. What types of games are being played, also are the games being played as one large group or just with our respective plays? despite how the games are being played, I feel like "Fishbowl" could do some games that focus on building relationships between the key characters, like the relationship between Calvin and Dr. Allen, and Calvin and Cynthia. Also, it must be hard trying to keep everyone active when break is so near, I know I'm having a hard time staying focused.

  5. I used a plethora of games to keep my the majority of my actors busy while I tried to get some easy filming out of the way.

  6. Claire - We can definitely go over the focusing issue in class. Sometimes, it is a losing battle, as you have all witnessed from time to time. This could be one of those weeks that's really difficult.

  7. i had a great time working with the actors today. i think today was incredibly productive and useful. although i do think we need to work on kicking hem into gear a little sooner, there's a little more talking and side conversation in general that i personally think there should be. anyways Mr.Moore and i had a great time playing a character development game with the killing time actors. we would give them a situation ex" what would your character do if a bear attacked them" it was really funny to watch and i found it interesting to see how they interacted with each other. it also gave Nate and i some time to talk to a few of the actors and pin point some problems that they might be having whit totally getting into their character. over all i'm so excited to work with this cast, and doing character development was so fun and it is definitely something i'd like to do again. if anyone has any games let me know!

  9. I read everything. I agree. I agree with Kate as well, it was a very successful day. We blocked 4 or 5 scenes! Good start!

  10. The games seemed to go well today, as well as the rehearsing and blocking. It was a lot less chaotic than I thought it would be. Also, I thought, authoritative voice is good, loud voice is bad? Hm. Okay also, we still need a bunch of people measured, but most of them already came in. Hopefully it won't be as messy.

  11. My costume crew is so sweet. They listened did all the boring work like cleaning the costume room and getting it ready to use. It was fun pretending to be Mrs. Bruno :)

  12. I think that our activities were fine for our group. We need to do some more relationship building activities between the cast though (Lucas). We have a great group, and I can already see them working great together. The only way to get them to connect better would be through trust and connection activities. Our directors and writers can discuss which games we want to do.

  13. I thought rehearsal got a lot better as it progressed. It was ideal to start rehearsal in the hallway by playing games, and then moving into the black box at 4:30. It seemed to really get the group focused. The characterization sheets worked really well for our group. I sensed a really great group dynamic. Working in the black box was extremely productive. I think the work we did in the hallway set the tone for a more productive rehearsal in the black box. I anticipate that that rotation will be my favorite.

  14. @Allison-to clarify my point, I was saying authoritative voice is good, yelling loudly is not.
To Everyone: Again, this week will be tough, but use your own gifts - some of you (and your actors) are better at getting people to listen in certain situations. Or impose a quiet time, backs turned away from the circle, lying down on backs, silent games like passing the imaginary ball, whatever works. Weeks like this leading up to a break are really hard to have full cast rehearsals. If you were around during KMK, you might recall that I called a total of 6 people that week leading up to winter break. It's crazy time.
And did I mention today that I LOVE teenagers? Well, I do. I LOVE them so much.

  15. I agree 100% and we should defenentily do some warm-ups such as the dance warmups in the musical or something to get physically active and pumped to rehearse.

  16. Wow this was a lot to read but yea I agree with it all. What me and Kate were trying to do was play games that help them build their characters. All the games that should be played have to have a meaning behind that the actors no about so they can take it more seriously
